Built for the film The Man from Snowy River, Craigs Hut stood for years as one of the great icons of Victorias Alpine National Park. Here it is captured against a magnificent backdrop of sweeping purple ranges, a spectacular addition to the hilltop upon which it was constructed. But there is a great irony about this scene. Todays high-country cattlemen are denied access to these mountains because they are now protected within national parks. And now our national parks are being overrun by feral animals and bushfires. This very hut was destroyed by the terrible fires that swept through the high country in December 2006. When will we learn that people such as these cattlemen are among our greatest Australian assets?
