Jesus, as played by Jim Caviezel, staggers under the weight of the cross. According to Roman custom, those condemned to crucifixion were forced to carry their own instrument of torture to the place of execution. The scene here is thus one of great contrasts: the suffering Christ, the leering soldiers, the bigoted religious leaders and a swarming crowd. Jesus had told his disciples that the greatest love is shown when people "lay down their lives for their friends". Here Jesus is fulfilling his own statement in the most literal sense possible. His would be a death for others, a sacrifice for their sin. Says Ken Duncan: "We\'ve all heard the story, but being there and seeing the re-enactment brought home how powerful it was."
