Here the actors are grappling with the famous question put to Jesus earlier by Pilate: What is truth? Unquestionably experienced, these actors were still quick to look to Mel for guidance. He was widely respected on set, not only as a competent director but also as a brilliant actor in his own right. Mel, in turn, was often conscious that there was a "higher director" than he. It was worth being patient in order to get it right.
