Scotland is the birthplace of my ancestors and one of my favourite places to visit. What I love most is the history of the place. Eilean Donan Castle was built in 1220 by the Clan Mackenzie (not my relatives) and in 1719 was held by Spanish Jacobites. After being attacked by three English frigates, it was left in ruins. In 1912 restoration work began that eventually took twenty years and cost a quarter of a million pounds. More recently the castle featured in a James Bond movie. I photographed the castle several mornings in a row, waiting for the tide to be just right. I was standing in freezing water to get this shot with perfect reflections.
