I love this view of Melbourne because of the unusual perspective. The skyline of the city is dwarfed by the yachts at rest in Port Phillip Bay, and the long wooden jetty in the foreground seems to stretch larger than the entire CBD! To me, this viewpoint from Williamstowns boat club brings a great sense of history and permanence to Melbourne. The skyline in the distance will morph into new shapes and combinations with each passing year. But the bay, jetty and boats will remain much the same. Nautical architecture changes far less quickly than cities! Captured here in the richness of the late afternoon sun, the bay and its vessels exude an ageless sense of stillness. There is much more to life, as Gandhi once said, than simply increasing its speed.
