The Flinders Ranges, although famous, do not readily yield their secrets to photographers. It can be hard to know just what to focus on in the midst of such vast barrenness. I have to admit that it wasn't until my third or fourth visit that I really began to see the subtleties of the area - and even this shot just sort of "happened" unexpectedly. It was midday, when you'd normally expect the light to be too harsh and the shadows too dark. Yet not only did the contrast work out beautifully in this photograph, but all the elements of the landscape came together to form a very pleasing whole. The old, gnarled river gums stood like gateposts alongside the dusty track, as if beckoning the viewer to enter in and feel the heartbeat of the land. Years later, I came back to this location only to find the details had all changed. The shot was no longer there. I was so glad I had taken this photograph when I had the chance.
