The stark desolation of the backdrop in this shot is typical of its Flinders Ranges location. Yet even here there is a waterhole, bringing a flush of green to a small valley. We sat for hours here, waiting for the right light, and in all that time we didn't see another soul. This shot was taken in the middle of the day, which is pretty unusual for an outback landscape photograph, but I wanted to try for even light across the whole scene. At the time I wasn't sure it would work, but somehow I was able to capture the shadow detail in spite of the bright contrasting light. It is a portrait of quintessential Australia - red-ochre rocks, an azure blue sky, a quiet waterhole, and an old gum tree sipping at the water's edge.
