Ablaze with the fires of sunset, a magnificent sky draws its embers across the desolate Flinders Ranges. Here the mountains glow like rough-hewn gold, ancient and harsh and as tough as the weather. In the foreground, a tottering shack - built for a movie set - stands like a monument to some half-forgotten age. The hut was later pulled down by over-zealous park rangers, and thus its symbolism was lost forever. Life has always been hard here. The men and women who opened up this region lived at the mercy of the elements: the searing heat, the driving rains, the long, long years of drought and hardship. Somehow they survived, living in dwellings just like the one pictured. They battled against the odds to establish their hold on the land. Through photos like this, their memory lives on.
