A remarkable tree, its branches a tangle of twists and turns, seems to fill the sky and dwarf the view beyond. It is of course a matter of perspective. Shot from anywhere else on this hillside, the scene would be dominated by different trees, or perhaps not by any at all. But this particular specimen has enormous character. The rust red of its bark is picked out as a glow by the evening sun. Its overhanging branches appear to point out the old timber homestead in the background. In a previous century a farming family lived and worked in these remote hills. They must have enjoyed many such scenes as this, becoming familiar with many individual trees and landforms. Often we are in too much of a hurry to appreciate such wild beauty. We do well when we stop long enough to really look.
