Suspended on steel cables, this wooden footbridge is a survivor from a bygone era. In years past it was used to access a section of this farm whenever the area was isolated by floodwaters. When I visited, a tree branch had fallen across the wires of the bridge, interrupting the view. So the farmer, who was with me, very obligingly cut the tree away so the bridge could once again swing free. I love the character of the old worn planks here, and the golden sweep of autumn leaves from the surrounding poplars. It was a reminder that the heritage of our past is still with us; we only need to appreciate it.
