Travelling around Lake Alexandrina, near the mouth of the Murray, we were told there was nothing much of interest to photograph. Then, to our surprise, we came upon this delightful little tower. Though few people are aware, it is apparently Australia's only inland lighthouse. It stands at Point Malcolm, between Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert, and was once an important beacon for paddle steamers. Those days are long since passed, and the Murray itself is in deep crisis. Even in this shot - made so beautiful by the sunset - it is easy to see large areas of dry flats before the lake begins: proof of the receding water levels. But how happy we were to discover this icon from a very different, more prosperous, era.
