This shot came on a canoeing expedition up Katherine Gorge. My assistant and I had been making our way to a camp at Schmidt s Rock. When the last of the day s sun was bouncing off the walls of the gorge, I noticed the wonderful way the light was reflecting in the water. It was like liquified gold. The glowing image of the cliffs was caught in the ripples of the stream, as if its form had been translated into another dimension. I find that sometimes, rather than shooting the subject itself, It's more lovely to shoot the reflection. With panoramic landscape photography people often make the mistake of only taking big views from a hilltop. But often shots have a rarer beauty when they simply capture a small slice.
