This pretty scene, with its soft pastel sky and wide expanse of lake, has a certain poignancy to it. The wharf is now dry and useless; the boat is stranded on the flats; the "Danger" sign is full of irony, for there is no water under it at all. The crisis of this lake (Lake Alexandrina) is directly related to the falling water levels of the Murray River which feeds it. In happier times this wharf welcomed large paddle steamers, offloading supplies and visitors to the prosperous Poltalloch Station. The parties held at the nearby homestead were legendary, and even visiting royalty once walked down this wharf. How times have changed. This scene now stands as a reminder of one of Australia's greatest man-made crises. We can only hope that good management will prevail, and that the water will one day rise again.
