Cradle Mountain National Park has a World Heritage listing due to its beautiful unspoiled wilderness - some of the best in Australia. At any time, in any season, snow storms can sweep over this area unannounced. Many hikers have lost their lives in this park because they are often ill-prepared for the dramatic changes in climate that occur as cold fonts are mercilessly blown in by the famous "Roaring Forties" which sweep unopposed over the Indian Ocean, carrying Antarctic gales and blizzards with them. Ominous clouds over the mountain top in this shot are the type of warnings of coming calamity that must be taken heed of. The crystal clear waters of the lakes provide a direct contrast with the surrounding rugged terrain. They have a tortured shape, hence the name of the shot - "Twisted Lakes".
