Boabs are among my favourite trees and I actually like them best when they have very little foliage. With their bare, bottle-shaped trunks and their graceful limbs reaching outwards, they create wonderful silhouettes against the sky and make ideal photographic subjects. Aboriginal legend says that when the earth was young, the boab was one of the most beautiful trees created, adorned all year round with wonderful foliage . After a while it began to boast of its beauty to the other trees. The maker of all things heard the boab singing its own praises and decided to punish it. For six months he allowed the tree its beauty, but for the other six months the boab was turned upside down to expose the roots. Now it boasts no more.
