This dramatic scene shows Uluru touched by a rainbow after a passing storm. Taken some years ago, the photograph today seems prophetic. Recently a great storm (of a very different kind) has blown across the whole management structure of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Under new park management guidelines this shot would not be allowed. In fact, vast areas of the park (more than 95%) are now completely off limits. Even worse is the attempt by the park's management to claim copyright over any artwork - including photographs - of any of this area's natural wonders. Although officially based upon the traditional Aboriginal concept of "Tjukurpa", these restrictions are in fact much more a case of bureaucracy gone mad. As one of my own Aboriginal friends has wisely put it, "We do not own the land; the land owns us!" The new restrictions actually go against the whole idea of Tjukurpa, for they disconnect more than 99.9 percent of the world's population from these amazing places. In the end I hope that the rainbow in this shot is symbolic of the peace (and good sense) that will one day prevail again.
