Like an army of terracotta soldiers, the limestone pillars of the Pinnacles, 245km (152 miles) north of Perth, tell a silent tale of aeons of geological weathering. Standing to attention in a rippling sea of sand, they look like the long-dead inhabitants of a barren moonscape - except for the tiny bushes clinging cheekily to existence at their feet, speaking simultaneously of the fragility and tenacity of life.
