Often photography comes down to simply keeping your eyes open along your journey. Here at the Finke River crossing, deep in the Northern Territory, it would have been easy to simply keep on driving towards the day s ultimate destination. Then I noticed this old River Gum in the middle of the stream. Its presence was like a symbol of steady defiance against the odds. In the dry season it had waited patiently between drinks, weathering the searing heat and the desiccation of the land. With the rains it had withstood great floods, its roots anchoring it against the water s assault. As the centrepiece of this shot, it arched beautifully over the iron-hard hills of the background and the diagonal ribbon of the river. So many shots are missed by photographers on their way somewhere else! I was so glad I stopped long enough to see this one.
