Shot in the Sixth Gorge of the Katherine Gorge system, this picture captures something of the relentless flow that has carved out these watercourses over many millennia. Even getting to this point on the river was an achievement. For long stretches a canoe had to be carried over our heads, often with farcical results! But the photograph itself manages to capture one of the great universals of our planet s landscape. A slightly longer exposure gives the shot a real sense of movement. The water surges and curves over the darkened boulders, its course traced as if by brush-strokes of white. The rock-strewn shore, perfectly in focus, accentuates the movement of the stream by its comparative solidity. So much of our world has been shaped by water. Shots like this show us why.
