I was one of the first contemporary photographers to shoot Mitchell falls, back in the 1980s. At that time, very few people knew about the rough bush track leading down to the falls. This spectacular waterfall can be difficult to photograph. The grandeur of the scene can be so overwhelming that you forget to create the third dimension in your image to give people a sense of the scale. Most people photograph it around the middle of the day so the light in the gorge is even. This time, I determined to come up with a new angle to convey the presence of this amazing place. This shot is taken late in the afternoon, with the last rays of the setting sun lighting up the distant escarpment and a full moon rising overhead. Off to the left, a photographer friend of mine who was sharing this wonderful moment with me, gives scale to the image.
