An ephemeral but brilliant pillar of light flares across a cloud-darkened sky, transforming the dull, overcast mood of Kata Tjuta into a celebration of sunrise. Rearing up from the flat, scrubby sand plains typical of central Australia, the Olgas (as they are also known) are made from conglomerate, a mixture of pebbles and boulders cemented together by sandstone. The domes create a natural amphitheatre that has played host to thousands of heavenly shows.
