Summer is a glorious time in Alaska. The exceptionally long hours of daylight provide terrific opportunities to take photos but the days can be very tiring as a result. In the height of summer the sun doesn't t really set at all - it just dips below the horizon. There is perhaps only an hour of darkness and then the sun rises again - an amazing phenomenon. This photo was taken at about midnight with the full moon drifting over Mt Denali and reflected in Wonder Lake. The moon rose from the left at around 11pm, did a full arc over the mountain and then set on the right hand side just 2 hours later. Alaska is a land of extreme contrasts. This lake would be frozen solid in winter and Mt Denali is usually cloaked in cloud, only visible for about 30 days each year. So it was a real blessing to capture it with clear skies and such a magnificent moon. I think the real wonder of this lake is the way it mirrors the majestic mountains that stand behind it.
