I was on Lady Elliot Island to speak about photography and one thing I said was that often the hardest part about photography is getting out of bed. The weather at the time was rather overcast and windy but I planned to get up for sunrise the next morning and I tried to inspire everyone else to join me.When my alarm went off early in the morning, I looked out at the weather dark and overcast and I thought, surely the sun wont be able to break through that. Had I not inspired all the others to get up, I may have been tempted to go back to bed myself, but I got up and went down to the coral beach I had seen the day before. As I waited for the light to come, only a few of the faithful turned up - many had thought this would be a futile exercise. The chair, left from the previous day, seemed to be inviting me just to sit and watch the morning unfold. As the rising sun tried to break through the clouds behind us, the clouds in front of us began to glow from the reflected light. The dawn light created a strange luminescence in the water which gave it such a beautiful powdery blue look. The whole scene only lasted for a matter of minutes and it was a real gift to be able to experience such a beautiful moment and share it with the other faithfuls. Im sure when some of those who did sleep in see this image, they will realise what an opportunity they missed.
