This is one of the most surreal experiences I I've had in all my journeys as a landscape photographer. Salar de Uyuni is often dry, but our drivers knew that recent rains had left water in the lake. Just before reaching the lake, they stopped and packed green bushes around the bottom of their vehicles to help prevent the salty water from splashing up into the engine bays. (I was glad it wasn't t my Toyota.) We entered the lake, with about 6 inches of water covering a firm salt base, and ventured into the endless horizon, aiming for an unseen island. It was like driving on a mirror, with the heavens beautifully reflected in the shallow water. The still conditions and clear water allowed us to see the delicate salt patterns in the firm salt base, as mile after mile we watched the drifting clouds and wondered what treasure awaited us.
