Looking out from this island across one of the largest salt lakes in the world, I was struck by an overwhelming sense of space. This tiny, rocky island is quite literally covered with cactus. I I've never seen such a profusion of cactus before. It's quite a surreal place. I felt like I had been transported to another planet, but it emphasised for me the diversity in creation. To get here, we had driven through about 6 inches of water, for more than 60 kilometres across Salar de Uyuni, the salt lake in the background. The shallow water allowed us to capture the amazing reflections of the bright blue sky and dramatic clouds. The subject matter of this image is very simple: just rocks, cactus and a salt lake with amazing reflections. And the bright, midday light was perfect for capturing the full strengths of the contrasting colours in this scene.
