I have long dreamed of one day going to the moon, and driving into this amazing landscape in the Atacama Desert was almost like being on another planet. I was with a group and several of us set up at a location we thought would be the best vantage point for sunset. We took many shots in the wonderful late afternoon light, then all the other photographers left, feeling quite happy with their results. But I waited, shooting towards the east to capture the full moon rising. As the moon hovered in the sky, the pastel colours of sunset began to deepen and explode. I had to wait for the light to be balanced in intensity from east to west, because this shot takes in a 220-degree view. Down in the car park, you will see the vans where my colleagues were watching and awaiting my return. The colours in this image are real and everyone regretted not staying to capture this magnificent moon rise.
