Birds are not usually my favourite photographic subject, but I do love flamingoes. They are so colourful and can provide wonderful contrast in a landscape. When we came across this flamingo colony feeding in the shallows of Lake Masek in Tanzania, we waited quite a long time for the birds to be in the right positions and the sun to come out from behind the clouds. Mindful that there was a family of hyenas nearby, we were concerned the birds might take flight. Adult flamingoes have few natural predators, but they will often fly when startled. But the birds stayed and the beautifully still water provided superb reflections. It seemed like a theatre with the birds performing a graceful dance. To capture the detail of the birds in this panorama, I stitched six individual shots together.
