A sweep of clouds and endless grassy plains gives just a hint of the majesty of Tanzania's Serengeti. Here three male lions watch and wait, their isolation due to the mortal fear they engender amongst other species. I photographed this group from an open Toyota, using a wide angle lens. The closest lion was just seven or eight metres away. All of a sudden he took an interest in me, coming near and fixing me with a deep, penetrating stare. My guide said we had to leave immediately. Now! he said, because that lion is about to pounce! I could see the intensity of the lion's eyes they had turned a real yellowy colour! So we sped away, reminded that this was no zoo. This was wild country, where every creature is either a hunter or hunted.
