There are a huge number of variables when it comes to photographing coastal locations: the days weather, the angle of the sun, the height of the tide, the size of the swell. In this view off the rocks at the southern end of Avoca Beach, I made use of the large waves of the morning and of the flaring, newly-risen sun. A long exposure created the ethereal look; it seemed like mist rising off the water. The full sun over the horizon could have easily blown out the shot, but I managed just to hold it all together. The final result was a wonderful and dramatic mix of glare, haze, shadow and subtle detail.
