Brisbane Waters became famous for the oysters farmed in the area. The Sheather family was prominent in the oyster industry and this was one of the jetties used by the oyster farmers. The barges in the foreground, specially designed for checking racks and harvesting oysters, were unique to this industry. This image was shot the same day as another, now-famous, image of mine called Sheathers Wharf, but it was this angle that originally caught my attention. After meeting some members of the Sheather family, I realised I had not paid sufficient homage to the oyster industry, which played an important role in the growth of the Central Coast. Since this image was taken, the oyster industry in our region has declined due to population growth and increasing pollution. The wharf, now in disrepair, is a skeleton from a bygone era. I m glad to have had the chance to immortalise such a significant element of our local history and character.
