I had been commissioned to take a photograph at one of my favourite locations for a book project for the new millennium and so I took this shot at North Avoca on January 1st, 2000. There was a colossal swell that day and I was in a precarious position as huge waves came crashing in, but I love to observe a violent sea. Right after I got this shot a giant wave hit me and my gear, completely soaking my camera. But it was worth it to get this shot and record the beginning of the new millennium. This is a very different photo its not pretty, but thats what I like about it. It is brooding and stormy, evocative and challenging all at the same time. The power of the ocean reminds me of the relative insignificance of human beings in relation to the scope of nature. There is something much bigger and far more powerful out there. Watching powerful waves crash onto the shore, I feel I can attach my problems to the waves and watch them smash upon the rocks.
