One of the mistakes people make when photographing waterfalls is to get too close. I have made this mistake myself at these very falls - Mackenzie Falls in the Grampians National Park. So, on this visit, I determined to stand back and capture the essence of the whole location. I climbed up onto a rock ledge to get a wide view, but this is a very popular location and other visitors kept walking into my shot. There seemed a never-ending stream of people! I passed the time by looking at the details in the landscape. The central rock in the mid-ground looks to me like a breaching whale with its mouth open. Finally, at last light, everyone else left. Then there was a surge of beautiful afterglow light, and I was the only one there to shoot it.
