A single eucalypt, its branches splayed out towards a pastel sky, stands strong as iron in South Australias Flinders Ranges. To the left, a full moon rises, like a harbinger of the night. The Flinders Ranges, so ancient and arid, are renowned for their stark beauty - a beauty famously captured in the paintings of Hans Heysen. We camped here overnight, enjoying a fire and the utter solitude of the landscape. Out of view of this shot runs a watercourse, which fills just once or twice a year with the infrequent rains. Many trees cling to the creeks margin. The tree in this photograph was the furthest from the creek bed, somehow thriving in the midst of these harsh yet spectacular surroundings.
