Lake Eyre covers a huge area of around 9,500 square kilometres. (No wonder our early explorers thought they had found an inland sea.) And there are many different parts, with dramatically different characteristics, all just begging for photographers to find their own interpretation. In early 2019, huge downpours of rain brought devastating floods to parts of Queensland and the Northern Territory. The water made a slow and torturous journey south, filling the Georgina, Dimantina and Warburton Rivers and flooding desert towns as it travelled. A second rain system brought even more water, extending across vast flood plains and eventually flowing into Lake Eyre, bringing life and colour to this dry country. This view of one of the river deltas leading into the northern end of Lake Eyre looked to me like Neptune's trident. I love the strong blue colour of the water contrasting with the surrounding flood plain.
