Lencois Maranhenses National Park in Brazil is known for its vast desert landscape of tall, white sand dunes. During the rainy season, valleys among the dunes fill with freshwater lagoons, prevented from draining due to the impermeable rock beneath. But in the dry season, the pools quickly evaporate. I specifically planned to be at this location after the rainy season when the valleys are full of fresh water. This photo was taken from a plane, with the doors off, with the beautiful golden glow of the late afternoon sun illuminating the rolling dunes. I love the people who have wandered out onto one of the dunes in this scene, as they give the image scale. There were so many different textures and patterns in this dramatic landscape. It took a long time to select one image from the hundreds I shot here.
