Zebras are fascinating animals, each with its own unique pattern of stripes. This makes them very photogenic and I think they know it. Often when you think you re just about to get a great shot, they turn away and present their backsides. The key is to learn patience. On this particular day the golden light was perfect to capture this mother and colt, so engrossed in each other that they were unconcerned about my presence. At just the right moment, they both gave me their full attention, as if posing for the shot. There were little ox peckers flitting around the zebras, showing how animals often work together. What I love about this shot is that it reminds me of the circle of life. Here the mother is nurturing her young colt. He is the new generation and needs good training to survive in a potentially hostile environment where many things would like to eat him.
