There have been many photographs of the Cape Otway Lighthouse, but here I have reduced it to a tiny detail on a far promontory. I wanted to show the historic tower in its context, amidst the wild and rugged shoreline that became known as "The Shipwreck Coast". The lighthouse has been in continual operation here since 1848. Even on this relatively gentle morning, just before sunrise, the sea was full of drama - in the photo, the waves can be seen smashing upon the central rock. The wonderful pastel pinks of the sky were thrown across the foreground, lending a marvellous sense of subtle mystery to the whole view.
