Amboseli National Park is exciting in the dry season, as herds of elephant wander down off the mountain slopes to access water holes scattered across the dry and dusty plains. On previous visits I had difficulty getting really close to the elephants, as you require special permission to go off track. But on this occasion (in the dry season) in a private conservancy within the park, we were able to get extremely close to the herds as they crossed the arid areas. We spent hours working with this giant and he moved away from us several times. But once he had our measure, he just stood there calmly no matter how close we got. In the end I was hanging out of the vehicle, holding my camera really low to the ground to give a true sense of his size and might. In a way, I was hoping he would challenge us, but he knew he had nothing to prove and nothing to fear.
