Only in recent years have the people of Rwanda begun to realise the great national treasure they have in their mountain gorillas which inhabit the steep, densely forested heights of Volcanoes National Park. In fact, many of the porters who now help carry tourists bags up the steep hillsides were once poachers. But now they know that protecting the gorillas is in the best interests of all concerned, so the gorilla families are guarded. On my first trip up the mountain, I didnt get any decent photos because the gorilla family we had tracked was foraging in a dense bamboo thicket. But fortunately I was able to go up a second time and came away with this picture of a big silverback relaxing in an open area with some of his offspring. This image was shot with my Phase One camera which allows incredible detail.
