Gorilla trekking offers one of Africas most profound wildlife encounters. Scouts who once may have been poachers, are now the protectors of these magnificent creatures. In Rwanda, tourists are guided through the National Park sometimes for hours to have a one-hour encounter with a gorilla family. Strict protocols are in place for the safety of all concerned and visitors are asked to remain at least seven meters away from the animals. Our group was received well by the gorilla family, giving us the experience of a lifetime. Towards the end of our allotted time, the Silverback came and sat right in front of me, radiating a powerful inner strength while watching over his troop. Clearly the rules of distance were not applicable to this Silverback. Then, as if knowing our time was up, the Silverback stepped towards me and gently pushed me aside with the back of his massive hand as if to say, Thats enough its family time now.
