People all over the world are fascinated by kangaroos. Being a country boy, I grew up surrounded by them. And, as a landscape photographer, I've spent a lot of time avoiding them. But I had never taken time to photograph our Aussie icon. This particular day, the morning mist rising off the grass alongside the Murray River revealed hundreds of kangaroos, all grazing contentedly. This mother hopped along with her joey peering out from her pouch. As she stopped to graze, the joey would nibble away at the grass in front of him, from the safety of his pouch. The mother was quite skittish always alert for potential danger. We tracked the mob for a while, slowly inching forward so as not to alarm them. For if you startled one, the whole troop would scatter. Fortunately, I was able to gain this animal s trust and get close enough to capture the beautiful relationship between mother and offspring.
