To me, this majestic tree (a river gum at a crossing on the Finke River) epitomises tenacity. It has hung on through countless seasons and through many moods of the river. After rain, this watercourse is a swollen torrent - the surge of water scouring the landscape. When the floods subside, beautiful pools appear along the flats, as in this spectacular shot. Then the pools slowly dry, waiting for another deluge. Drought gives way to flood until the waters are eclipsed once more by the desert in a cycle that can take years to complete. This classic eucalypt has seen it all - over and over - but still its roots cling fast.
