The majesty of Uluru lies not only in its overall grandeur, but also in the smaller treasures hidden around its base. Pictured is an area known as Mutitjulu, which is home to one of Ulurus most permanent pools. Here it is captured in a very tranquil pose, with just a little run-off down the slope of the rock. When it rains, however, the trickle becomes a gushing waterfall. Even the place I stood while photographing this scene would then be engulfed in water. For the indigenous inhabitants, such a waterhole at the foot of one of the worlds largest monoliths meant life and sustenance and a sense of permanence. Only on those very rare occasions when it completely dried out did the people have to move
