Near the end of the long dry season in Kenya, we had special permission to go off road in the conservancy in Amboseli National Park. We had photographed a couple of giraffes at this pond the day before, but they had been rather skittish. A giraffe is extremely vulnerable when it lowers its head down to drink. On our last morning, we decided to see what else might come to this fountain of life on the dry pan. There was nothing happening when we arrived, but in the distance we could see animals heading towards us. We waited, remaining very still, and were gifted with these animals. It took the giraffes a long time to decide it was safe, because they could see our vehicle nearby. Finally, they did come in to drink, then some zebras joined them. Satisfied that we could not top this amazing experience, we returned to camp for an early breakfast.
