People have been asking me for some time for black and white wildlife images, so here is one of one of the most spectacular elephants Ive ever encountered. This grand old bull had been crossing the plain with a large herd, acting as their rear guard. He noticed our interest in his herd and, concerned that we may pose a threat, he stopped to challenge us while the herd escaped. I was using a very wide-angle lens, from a low angle, just a few metres away from the old bull. Had he wanted to, he could have easily charged and toppled our vehicle. But something about the elephants demeanour gave me the feeling he was only being protective and all was OK. After I had taken this shot, the old fella returned once more to the herd. Because this was captured on a larger format camera, you can see all the detail in the textures of this patriarchs skin and his ivory. The larger you see this print, the better, as then you will really be able to speak about the elephant in your room.
