Meet the Queen of the Birmingham Pride of Lions, situated at Ngala Private Game Reserve, adjacent to Kruger National Park in South Africa. She is the alpha female of the huge pride, known to comprise up to twenty-five lions, with one other leucistic like her. Leucism is a recessive genetic condition, causing partial loss of pigmentation in animals. Lions hunt as a pack and this white lioness takes the lead. All defer to her, trusting her cunning and prowess. There are very few white lions left in the wild, with estimates ranging from only 13 to 15 in total. Needless to say, I was very keen to see her for myself. We spent days tracking the pride., patiently waiting for the hunt to begin. I captured this shot as the pride finally set off at dusk, with focus and determination clearly set in the Queen’s azure eyes.
